According to EMMILE Programme, on Feb. 27, 2012, morning, Irmgarda Kasinskaite-Buddeberg, with her colleague Alton Grizzle, both from UNESCO, will be speaking about:
Media and Information Literacy (MIL) as a composite concept
Abstract: The presentation will outline the development of the concept of Media and Information Literacy (MIL) introduced by UNESCO few years and its integration into in a number of international, regional and country level projects and initiatives. UNESCO believes that traditional concept of literacy has been replaced by the concept that is a plural, dynamic and situational as well as closely linked to the ability of citizens both at individual and societal level to identify, understand, create, communicate and compute information. It is fundamental to ensure that all citizens have a key set of competencies – knowledge, skills and attitudes – needed to succeed throughout all stage of their life. The concept of the MIL is a part of UNESCO’s larger mandate to promote open, inclusive, pluralistic and participatory knowledge societies. In the first part of the presentation Alton Grizzle will introduce the recent work done by UNESCO in development of MIL Curriculum for Teachers published in 2011. In the second part of the presentation, Irmgarda Kasinskaite-Buddeberg will be speaking about the development of MIL indicators that would help to assess the MIL competencies at national level.

Dr. Irmgarda Kasinskaite-Buddeberg obtained her PhD in Humanitarian Sciences, Communication and Information specialization from Vilnius University (2006), Master in Information Management (1999) from Vilnius University and Bachelor of Arts degree (1996) from Vilnius Academy of Arts (Lithuania). She is currently a programme specialist working at UNESCO’s Communication and Information Sector, Knowledge Societies Division in Paris, France. She is in charge of programmes related to the Media and Information Literacy, particularly development of MIL indicators; promotion of multilingualism in cyberspace and implementation of the Recommendation concerning the Promotion as well as use of Multilingualism and Universal Access to Cyberspace as well as she works on the project on use ICTs to access information and knowledge by persons with disabilities. She contributed to the implementation of numerous projects, international events, publications and written number of scientific articles on a wide range. Before joining UNESCO in 2002, she worked as Senior Programme Specialist, Department of Information and Informatics, Ministry of Public Administration Reforms and Local Authorities, Lithuania.
