Digital citizenship and libraries

Aldo Pirola gave an interesting contribution about the different viewpoints on technologies as means that facilitates the digital citizenship. He then reflected on the role of libraries as an educational environment that enables citizens and enhance their active participation in society.

EMMILE opening

The warm welcome by Claudio Gamba (Regione Lombardia) and a lot of greetings by Stefano Parise (AIB),Ulrich  Braess (Goethe Institut), Randi Lundvall (IFLA SLRC), Annamaria Romagnolo (US Lombardia – in sostituzione del Direttore Colosio) e Irmgarda Kasinskaite-Buddeberg (UNESCO) made the EMMILE opening simply GREAT!   Randi has brought a welcome from the IFLA President Ingrid Parent and Irmgarda the one from the Director-General of UNESCO Irina Bokova.

EMMILE in libraries (and beyond)

Abstract: The contribution aims at presenting EMMILE, its roots, purposes and features. A reflection focuses on “Emile” by Rousseau, published in 1762: a new (and utopic) method of education is sketched, that aims at preserving the child’s the natural goodness, in that book that is recognized to have marked the beginning of modern pedagogy. Since then, 250 years full of  revolution and innovation in many fields have passed by. What are the caracteristics of the 21st Century’s “Emile”, or, better “Em(M)ile”? Why should we care of that “M”? The need for a holistic approach in media and information literacy education is underlined.

Luisa Marquardt teaches Library and Information Science at the Faculty of Education, University “Roma Tre”. Qualified and specialized in both fields – library science and education -, she worked as a chartered librarian in high schools for over 20 years and as a librarians’ educator as well; she has been professionally involved in school libraries, school librarianship and information literacy since late 1970s, takes part in work and research groups; contributes to library journals; translated the IFLA-UNESCO School Library Manifesto into Italian; edited the Italian edition of the IFLA Guidelines for school libraries (1995, 1998, 2004); collaborated with the Interuniversity Supercomputing Consortium CASPUR (http://www.caspur.it) and the Goethe-Institut Italien. She is Director of a small but active community library, the “Biblioteca Statuario” (http://bibliostatuario.wordpress.com) and a proud member of several associations (e.g., AIB, AIDA, IASL, IFLA, LAG Schulbibliotheken) and groups (e.g., ENSIL). She is currently the Director Europe for IASL (2009-2012), an elected member of the IFLA SLRC, a member of the IASL-IFLA Joint Steering Committee and the coordinator of the AIB National Standing Committee on School Libraries.  Information literacy and library teaching: a report of best practices in South Tyrol

Abstract: In a more and more complicated and globalized society, where information grows in size, information literacy is the keyword for the fundamental citizien’s right and for the future role of libraries. The experiences gained in South Tyrol are the result of a long and formative structurated process, which has pointed up the development of information literacy skills in order to transform school libraries into centres of education and multimedia resources, into places where “someone learns how to learn”, in a context of research and action, to pursue knowledge and understanding. The best practices performed inSouth Tyrolhave changed deeply the role and the duties of school libraries. They build, together with the public libraries, an information network connecting two different typologies of services. This distinctive feature of our system increases the quantity and quality of resources available for the consumer at any time and place.

Patrizia Caleffi works at the Department of Italian Culture, Office of Long life learning, libraries and audiovisual resources, in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano –South Tyrol, where she has been active in the field of libraries since over 20 years assuming the responsibility for it. The actions which fall within this sphere are the financing of public libraries for activities, working, and investments, the support of public and school libraries and librarians providing advice and help to improve the development of the system, education, cooperative and professional training of librarians, the management of the office library specialized on librarianship, the projects for the promotion of books and reading. The latest innovations in the area of IT (Information technology) are the centre of her work, being engaged in plans, which realize integrated services in the land, raising the quality of them for the customers of public and school libraries (collective catalogueBIS, SMSLibrary, Self Check). Education and training of librarians are very important activities, which include the planning and development of a programme of courses and seminars covering all ranges of ability in cooperation with AIB (Associazione italiana biblioteche). As regards the teaching staff concerned with school libraries many other initiatives are designed specially to be organised with the approval of the local School Government.

Ulrich Braeß

Il 27 febbraio mattina Ulrich Braeß porterà i saluti del Goethe-Institut Mailand che dirige dallo scorso anno e del cui programma di attività culturali, della biblioteca e dei corsi di lingua è responsabile.

Dopo la formazione universitaria in economia aziendale e matematica, ha lavorato per  le Assicurazioni Gothaer (1979-1987),  in qualità di assistente alla presidenza e direttore del controllo commerciale,  dal 1987 al 1992 per lo Schweizerische Rentenanstalt  (Istituto svizzero di previdenza), quale direttore marketing presso la filiale tedesca, dal 1992 al 1995 per Equitable Life per la costituzione della filiale tedesca. Dal 1995 lavora per il Goethe-Institut: Direttore delle sedi del Goethe-Institut in Germania per lo studio del tedesco (1995-2003), a Barcelona (2003-2009), Washington (2009-2011) e ora a Milano.
